Master's and PhD study
Gardner Research Unit is affiliated with the Department of Life Sciences at Tokyo University. Students may work in the lab (located on the RIKEN campus in Wako, Japan) while obtaining a Master's or PhD degree from Tokyo University. Entrance examinations are in August for the Master's program and in January for the PhD program (for those who have already obtained a Master's degree). Applicants should have a strong interest in visual neuroscience, decision making and/or attention. Students with any of a variety of undergraduate backgrounds are eligible, but, in particular, students having majored in neuroscience, behavioral psychology, bioengineering, computer science or related fields are especially encouraged to apply. Non-japanese applicants without Japanese language skills are welcome. The entrance exam and coursework requirements can be fulfilled in English. Post doc
We are always interested in highly motivated scientist who would like to study visual perception with a combination of functional MRI techniques and psychophysics. Candidates should have, or be expecting to receive, a PhD in neuroscience, bioengineering, or related fields. A strong training in experimental methodology (not necessarily fMRI and psychophysics – for example, single-unit neurophysiology is appropriate) with solid quantitative skills is required. Seminars and daily scientific activities at the RIKEN Brain Science Institute are all conducted in English. Non-Japanese applicants may apply for on-campus housing for their first year. RIKEN is located in Wako, Japan which is a 12 minute train ride from central Tokyo. The RIKEN Brain Science Institute provides various forms of support for foreign researchers.
